Description
Head and shoulder oil on canvas portrait of Mary Hursthouse. Subject is wearing a pale green dress (empire line) with white shirt and ruffled collar. Has a gold and brown circular brooch on her chest - appears the bear the letter "M". She is also wearing a ruffled bonnet trimmed with pale pink edging and hair is tucked up inside bonnet - she has a curly fringe. Handwritten in sepia coloured ink on lower rear of canvas is the following text: "This most Accurate Likeness of Mary Hursthouse / who was the eldest daughter of / Mr. Issac Jecks of Wisbach / was painted by Snellgrove / in February, 1822, in the 37th Year of her Age / B this self-taught artist came down to Wisbach to paint / the likeness of Mrs Coble who was then in a dying state / of a Decline which numbered among its victims / in May, 1822. she was the daughter of Mr Jecks. / Thomas Jecks, the eldest son, died in Hertfordshire, February 1822."
