Tongaporutu Coastline - remnants of the Third Sister after a massive storm, 29 September 2003

Production date
29 Sep 2003
Description
Image captures the aftermath of 29 September 2003's massive storm that destroyed the Third Sister and one of the Four Brothers. Taken from a low angle, in the foreground is an expanse of sand which is covered in patterns of white froth. In the middleground is the cliff face above Gibbs' Beach and the Three Sisters, with the smallest Sister now only a nub of rock. In the background Whitecliffs is only just visible and Mount Taranaki is obscured by cloud. In the sky the clouds are breaking up and the light is low. In response to this image, Pat Greenfield told a story about the distinctive hum of the storm, which she believes may have been at a pitch that contributed to the destruction of the rock stacks. She also mentioned that amidst the frenzy of the storm, she could hear one skylark singing. Photograph taken 29 September 2003.
