These jandals, marketed as thongs because they were not made by an officially licensed holder of the jandal trademark, were designed for supporters of the Taranaki rugby team and were purchased from Kingsway Menswear in 2002. While Aucklander Morris Yock is widely thought to have invented jandals a Taranaki woman and her brother credit their father, John Cowie with the invention. See 'Morris Yock trademarks the jandal', URL: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/kiwi-icon-born-maurice-yock-lodges-application-for-the-trademark-jandals  (Ministry for Culture and Heritage) for further details on this "jandal scandal".
