This smasher was used by Robert Graham, who owned a boot repair and saddlery shop in Queen Street, Waitara. Smashers were used in a similar way to a collar maker's mallet, for smoothing by light tapping the edges of a blocked saddle seat or for levelling and consolidating the stuffing in the seat with heavier blows.
