Description
Daguerreotype of Kararaina (Caroline) and Hera (Sarah) Barrett (aged 23 and 16 respectively), daughters of Richard (Dicky) Barrett and Rawinia (granddaughter of paramount Te Atiawa chief Tautara). The sisters are wearing matching European dresses and both wear scarves around their necks. Both are looking away from the camera. The daguerreotype is housed in a plain maroon leather case with plain maroon velvet lining. The case has double clasps that on the right hand side. A gold metal matt surrounds the image. The daguerreotype was taken by Insley in late 1852 or early 1853. The portrait is one of the earliest known daguerreotypes to have been made in New Zealand and one of the earliest known photographic portraits of Maori subjects.
