USS Staten Island

The USS Staten Island was an American icebreaker ship which docked at New Plymouth on 17 November 1958 on its way to the Antarctic for Operation Deepfreeze IV. Some of the 247-man crew were billeted to local homes and took part in a range of activities during their six-day stay, including hunting, fishing and dancing.

I recall the visit of this icebreaker to our port. My eldest brother had met a sailor from the Staten Island, his name was Dean Reef, as a child I was given a sailors hat by this person.
