A German Commemorative Medal For Langensalza. The circular brass medal features the left facing profile of King Georg V. "GEORG V.v.G. Koenig V. Hannover " is marked around the profile. " LANGENSALZA / 27. JUNI / 1866. " is marked inside a wreath on the reverse. A yellow and white striped ribbon is attached to the medal by a simple suspension ring.

These types of medals were "instituted by King Georg V on 27 July 1866 following the Battle of Langensalza against Prussia on 15 June 1866 to be awarded to ‘all who fought in this brave battle, even though the outcome was without success’" See: http://www.medal-medaille.com/sold/product_info.php?cPath=261&products_id=8291  This medal was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a large collection made by prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
