Description
Episodes 5, 6, 10, 21, 27, 32, 37, 38, 40, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 58, 59 and 63 of Graham Kirk's comic strip "Dioxin Man". "Dioxin Man" was the first storyline in Kirk's "Dick Sargeson" comic series. It follows the story of Dick Sargeson, a former intrepid photographer, now semi-retired and working for the Daily Mail in New Plymouth. In "Dioxin Man" Sargeson gets caught up in adventures investigating Dioxin Man, a character that was born out of a chemical spill at Hodgekiss Chemicals, a company headed by evil herbicide baron Jeremy Hodgekiss.
"Dioxin Man" features many recognisable Taranaki people who used to model for Kirk's characters. Figures include artist Wayne Morris who 'plays' Bruce Bildgepipe (the man transformed into Dioxin Man). The comic also features New Plymouth landmarks such as Back Beach, the Port and the Sugar Loaf Islands.
The "Dioxin Man" storyline was inspired by an actual chemical spill at Ivon Watkins-Dow, New Plymouth. "Dioxin Man" ran for roughly 70 episodes in the "The Listener" magazine in the mid 1980s.
