 Description
An ornate silver teapot. The teapot has a fluted base with foliage patterns, on which sits a narrow stem of the teapot. This then rises outwards into the wide body. The body is topped with a lid with a pyramid shaped point. The handle of the teapot is also ornately decorated. The body of the teapot is covered with flowers and foliage. Each side of the teapot has panels for inscription, but only one is filled in: " PRESENTED TO / MRS. HAMBLYN / by Mrs. Hood and Family / FOR HER KINDNESS AND ATTENTION / TO PETER HOOD / who died at New Plymouth / on the 29th July / 1856 "

This ornate teapot tells a sad story of long journeys and illness in 1850s New Plymouth. The teapot was gifted to Mary Hamblyn in 1856, from a Mrs Hood. Mrs Hood's son Peter arrived in New Plymouth in 1855, and may have been a lodger with Mary Hamblyn. However, Mary certainly took care of Peter Hood, and this teapot recognises Mary's care given to this unwell man. Unfortunately Peter died of consumption (pulmonary tuberculosis) at the age of 35. The teapot was buried during the Taranaki Wars, as the Hamblyns fled to Nelson to escape the fighting around their home.
