Trimble travelled around the province either on foot or on horseback, and it includes an account of him climbing the mountain.
William Heywood Trimble was born in Taranaki. His father immigrated to New Zealand from Liverpool in about 1875. The family settled in Inglewood and opened a sawmill there. They then moved to Dunedin at some stage. William was the first librarian of the Hocken Library.
