Stock Remedies Act, 1934. / Contents 12ozs . " is written on one side of the box together with a drawing of a cow, sheep and pig. " Sykes's Drench / Directions / HOW TO MIX SYKES'S DRENCH / Half to a full packet to be put into a / dry jug; add a pint of warm water / or thin oatmeal gruel, and mix / gradually with a tablespoon. If / necessary, give night and morning. /You may give it in a Bran Mash / DIRECTIONS , AND HOW TO / DRENCH A COW - / ON SIDE OF PACKET / Sykes's Drench / McL & S 9229 " is written on another side. " HOW TO DRENCH A COW / Stand on right side of the cow, place the left hand inside her mouth / and take a firm grip of the upper jaw. Lean your back against the cow's / shoulder. Place the nozzle of the Drench Tube or bottle at the side of the / mouth, well back over the tongue, and gradually pour the Drench down the / throat, giving the animal time to breathe and swallow. If the cow coughs, / lower the head and cease pouring down the fluid until the coughing is over. " is written on another side. The box still contains its original contents.

Only the colour-blind could miss this packet of Sykes’s Purgative Drench. The vivid packaging, which has aged and faded slightly on this example, meant there was little chance of losing it in the clutter of the farm shed. Marketed
for cows, sheep and pigs, the drench was one of a string of Sykes’s successful veterinary products, and came with handy instructions on how to drench cows.
