Godley, John Robert

Description
John Robert Godley was born in Ireland in 1814, eldest son of landed gentry. In 1863 he graduated from Oxford University with a BA and after studying at the bar, spent a brief time practising law. He became interested in Wakefield's NZ Co and in 1849 he and his family sailed to New Zealand on the ship Lady Nugent. He remained in New Zealand until 1852 when he returned to England, working in the War Office until his death in 1861.
Copies of four letter books contain correspondence relating to the colonisation of New Zealand 1850 - 1860. The correspondence deals principally with the formation of the Canterbury Association, and the founding, and early years of Canterbury
The correspondence to Godley includes letters from Lord Lyttelton, I.E. Featherston, W. Fox and E. G. Wakefield and letters from Godley to Gladstone
