The Mokau Collieries Ltd was formed in 1930 by Alexander Alexander (NP) Willie Abraham (NP), Anton Fischer (NP), Henry Ford (NP) Oliver Firth (NP), Thomas Hughson (Rahotu) and Charles Stead (Waitara). Oliver Firth had obtained a 59 year lease for mining rights on land farmed by Mr Wieland Christoffel on the Mokau River
