Sword, 1845 Infantry Officer's

An 1845 pattern infantry officer's sword with a curved, grooved, flat backed blade and a three barred brass handguard featuring Queen Victoria's cypher and a fishskin grip. It is accompanied by a leather scabbard with metal fittings and a mid band suspension ring. The sword has a fishskin grip.

This sword is said to have originally belonged to Colonel Evans, of the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers who was killed at the battle of Alma during the Crimean War. It was collected and brought to New Zealand by Captain Edward Frederick Hemingway.
