 Description
A heavy iron porthole from the wreck of the Tasmanian Maid. The heavy glass in the porthole is shattered with some large pieces of glass missing. There are eight circular holes in the frame of the porthole and a ninth hole which is slightly larger than the rest with a screw thread. The metal appears to have been painted gold. The porthole has a hinge on one side and a mechanism for closing it on the other side.

This porthole was salvaged from the wreck of the Tasmanian Maid, off the coast of New Plymouth, by Nicholas Reeves in the mid 1990s. The iron paddle steamer, which was previously called the Sandfly, was used as a supply ship during the First Taranaki War. It was wrecked on a reef on 16 January 1868 with no loss of life.
