Dr
Peter
Wilson,
who
was
chief
surgeon
of
New
Plymouth
Hospital.
He
and
his
family
arrived
in
New
Plymouth
in
1847,
after
some
time
spent
in
Whanganui.
The
first
New
Plymouth
hospital
was
in
Mangorei,
on
the
site
of
what
is
now
New
Plymouth
Boys'
High
School,
and
was
mainly
frequented
by
local
Maori.
Perhaps this magnifying glass was used by Dr Wilson to help him see patient notes or correctly measure dosages of medicines in times before electric light, or to get a closer look at what ailed his patients!
