In 1881, Luke Adams, a country potter from Farnham, England, established his own pottery business in Christchurch. Luke Adams Pottery Ltd was one of the few New Zealand potteries that did not have its immediate origins in the heavy clay products of bricks, drainage pipes or sanitary ware.
The mainstay of the company were ornamental and domestic wares such as household containers, jugs, teapots, vases and flowerpots.

Luke Adams died in 1918 but the company survived until 1975 becoming at this time the longest running pottery in New Zealand.
